Joseph Hernandez Pledges Stronger Upstate Investment as Comptroller Candidate

Joseph Hernandez, the Republican candidate for New York State Comptroller, is emphasizing the need for stronger investment in Upstate communities as part of his 2026 campaign. Speaking during a visit to the Southern Tier, Hernandez said Albany has too often overlooked large portions of the state when it comes to economic development, infrastructure spending, and pension fund investments.

Hernandez argued that the comptroller’s office should play a more active role in ensuring taxpayer dollars are invested responsibly and equitably across New York, not concentrated in politically favored regions. He pointed to the size and influence of the state pension fund, saying better oversight and smarter investment decisions can both protect retirees and support long-term economic growth statewide.

Framing his campaign around accountability and fiscal discipline, Hernandez said his private-sector experience gives him a different perspective from career politicians who have controlled Albany’s finances for decades. He added that restoring trust with taxpayers, particularly in Upstate New York, will be central to his approach if elected.
