Wall Street investor and entrepreneur Joseph Hernandez has officially launched his bid for New York State Comptroller, challenging longtime Democratic incumbent Tom DiNapoli in the 2026 general election. Hernandez is running as a Republican, arguing that New Yorkers deserve stronger fiscal oversight and accountability from Albany’s top financial watchdog.
Hernandez, a Cuban-American who built his career in biotech and investment, says the comptroller’s office has been under-utilized in restraining government waste and protecting taxpayers, particularly with big state authorities like the MTA carrying massive debt and inefficient spending.
Highlighting what he sees as missed investment opportunities and mediocre pension fund returns under DiNapoli’s leadership, Hernandez has made fiscal discipline and oversight central to his campaign. He also tied his candidacy to broader concerns about unchecked government spending and policies coming out of New York’s Democrat leadership.
The comptroller role isn’t a back bench job. It oversees the state’s massive pension fund, audits state agencies and local governments, and influences how billions in state contracts are managed — areas Hernandez says demand sharper scrutiny and a business-minded approach.
